Rediscovering Analogue Practice in Synthesizer Ensembles

This chapter explores analogue synthesizer practice, with a particular focus upon the contemporary synthesizer ensemble. Two active case studies are featured: the Modular Synthesizer Ensemble, directed by Gammon (based in Austria), and the Leeds Analogue Synthesizer Ensemble (or Recon Synthesizer Ensemble), directed by the author (based in the UK). These two case studies represent contrasting approaches to the selection or design of hardware synthesizers as ensemble instruments, but with similar musical objectives. An innovative ensemble practice is discussed where the musical focus is placed upon the exploration of sound synthesis parameters using the physical control panel of the synthesizer. The importance of the analogue synthesizer ensemble to engage ensemble participants in critical listening and experimental sound design is noted, particularly in the context of developing rhythmic, pulse-based music.
