Abstract
This review paper provides a comprehensive overview of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) applications in railway infrastructure studies, with a specific focus on railway track infrastructure. The paper covers various aspects, including UAV types, flight performance, selection criteria, and regulations for railway environments. It explores sensor technologies used in drone-based inspections, such as imaging sensors, LiDAR, and infrared thermography. The application of UAVs in railway tracks, bridges, and tunnels is discussed in detail. The identified future prospects and challenges underscore the need for advancements in sensor technologies, the integration of AI and machine learning, and the importance of regularly updating regulatory frameworks. Overall, the integration of UAVs in railway infrastructure monitoring holds promise for enhancing safety, refining maintenance strategies, and improving operational efficiency in the railway industry.
