E se fosse connosco? A construção de coligações anti-racistas no RAP português contemporâneo | And what if it were us? The construction of anti-racist coalitions in contemporary Portuguese RAP

Em Portugal, ao longo dos últimos trinta anos, tem-se testemunhado uma tensão crescente entre atores racistas nas esferas sociais e políticas, e o ativismo anti-racista. Nomeadamente, através de determinadas associações (tais como o SOS Racismo) e indivíduos como Mamadou Ba, assim como várias produções cinemáticas, literárias e musicais, o combate ao racismo tem ganhado fôlego nas últimas décadas. A música RAP, sendo uma ferramenta indispensável na articulação de mensagens sócio-políticas para um público jovem e marginalizado, é um objeto de estudo extremamente útil neste debate. Especificamente, este gênero musical tem construído discursos inclusivos, capazes de criar ressonâncias com diversas vítimas de discriminação na sociedade portuguesa: as pessoas afro-portuguesas, as mulheres, a população Roma, a comunidade LGBT+, a classe operária, as pessoas com deficiência(s), entre outros exemplos. Assim sendo, este ensaio examinará a música RAP portuguesa do século vinte-e-um, no intuito de especificar as suas estratégias anti-racistas e, simultaneamente, interseccionais. Utilizando como referência teórica os comentários de Ibram X. Kendi, defendendo uma política anti-racista e totalmente anti-discriminatória (2019), este texto nalisará os seguintes exemplos do RAP português dos últimos quinze anos: «Portugal aos ortugueses» (2010), «R.E.G. (Resistência e Guerrilha)» (2012), e «S.E.F (Suplício de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras)» (2012), de Chullage; «E se fosse contigo» (2016/2017), de Carlão e Boss AC; «O Sem-Precedente» (2019), de Fado Bicha e Telma Tvon. Através de close-readings líricos e musicais destes casos, determinar-se-á a medida em que o RAP português contemporâneo tem contribuído para a construção de coligações anti-racistas interseccionais.

In Portugal, over the past thirty years, one has witnessed a growing tension between racist elements in society and politics, and anti-racist activism. Specifically, through the work of certain associations (such as SOS Racismo) and individuals like Mamadou Ba, alongside instances of cinematic, literary, and musical production, the fight against racism has been gaining momentum over the past few decades. RAP music, as a key tool for articulating socio-political messages to young, marginalised audiences, functions as an extremely useful object of study for this debate. Namely, this musical genre has been contributing towards inclusive discourses, which are capable of resonating with diverse victims of discrimination in Portuguese society: Afro-Portuguese people, women, the Roma population, the LGBT+ community, the working class, persons with disabilities, amongst other examples. Therefore, this essay will examine twenty-first century Portuguese RAP, in order to determine its anti-racist (and, simultaneously, intersectional) strategies. Using Ibram X. Kendi’s comments – defending an anti-racist and completely anti-discriminatory politics (2019) – as a theoretical reference, this text shall analyse the following examples of Portuguese RAP from the past fifteen years: «Portugal aos portugueses» (2010), «R.E.G. (Resistência e Guerrilha)» (2012), and «S.E.F (Suplício de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras)» (2012), by Chullage; «E se fosse contigo» (2016/2017), by Carlão and Boss AC; and «O Sem-Precedente» (2019), Fado Bicha and Telma Tvon. Through lyrical and musical close readings of these songs, I will interrogate the degree to which contemporary Portuguese RAP has helped to construct intersectional anti-racist coalitions.
