(C)overt translation

The concepts of overt and covert translation are two translation types grounded in the functionalist-linguistic theory of translation proposed by Juliane House (1981, 1997). This theory posits that the primary purpose of translation is to achieve equivalence of function between the source text and the target text within their respective cultural contexts. Overt and covert translation are two distinct ways of achieving this: An overt translation is characterised by a strong presence of the source culture in the target text; a covert translation appears to be an original text within the target culture.
