Imperfect modernism: Niavaran cultural center, Tehran, 1978

The Niavaran Cultural Center in Tehran, Iran, was designed by Kamran Diba and completed in 1978. It is a lesser-known example of modern architecture that intersects heritage conservation and the changing sociopolitical landscape of Iran. Within the broader discourse on modern heritage, this focused case study reflects the dual forces of globalization and the local expression to preserve national and cultural identity through a modernist gesture. The study explores how the Niavaran Cultural Center embodies key aspects of modern architecture, including social ideals, structural innovation, and unified architectural vision. It emphasizes the historical significance of the building, and its current condition and immediate future, particularly in the context of preservation and renovation. This analysis focuses on the current challenges of adapting the building to the contemporary demands, culturally and technologically. The vulnerability of the modern heritage in the nonWestern contexts is highlighted in the evolving local attitudes towards the built heritage. This paper offers an insight into the local dynamics and contested narratives in the documentation and preservation of modern architectural heritage post the Revolution in Iran, both physically and ideologically.
