Abstract
This paper looks at the language used by bishops in England and in some dioceses of NE France in the late 11th and first six decades of the 12th c to examine their use of reform vocabulary, which was very limited. By contrast, bishops preferred to stress their pontifical authority and their pastoral care, in both of which concepts they were influenced by papal diplomatic.
