Abstract
This chapter considers the circumstances that brought Asa Briggs to the Chair of Modern History at the University of Leeds in 1955 and details the main features of the six years he spent there. Briggs' impact on the University and its School of History is analysed and the conclusion offered that his considerable reputation for curriculum innovation ('redrawing the map of learning')began here.
