Abstract
This policy briefing sets out evidence and recommendations on class inequality, workforce sustainability and mental wellbeing in UK television. Drawing on findings from the AHRC-funded project What’s On? Rethinking Class in the Television Industry (2023–2026) and sector-wide wellbeing research by the Film & TV Charity, it argues that class inequality should be understood as a systemic labour-market issue rather than solely a matter of access or individual resilience. The briefing introduces the concept of 'classed risk distribution' to describe how insecurity, long-hours cultures, informal recruitment and uneven progression concentrate financial and emotional risk on those least able to absorb it. It proposes proportionate, measurable actions for DCMS, Ofcom, PSBs, funders and industry bodies.
