Abstract
The Khazars form the 'hidden centre' of Ibn Fadlan's account, his mission sent partly to bolster the Volga Bulgars against their looming presence. However, he offers scant description. This chapter demonstrates the importance of the Khazars to Abbasid strategic calculations, and explains why this was necessary to conceal.
