Abstract
This essay explores Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick's controversial 1993 reading of Henry James's novel _The Wings of the Dove_ (1902) in her essay 'Is the Rectum Straight?' Concentrating on Sedgwick's deployment of the pronoun 'in', the essay reads, and explands on, Sedgwick's understanding of anal erotics, selfhood and creativity in James's novel. It then explores why, in literary criticism, the word 'in' has such a purchase on critical procedure and self-conception. The essay also explores how these questions around reading and sexuality, touch on questions of burial, bereavement and commemoration.
