Abstract. The Archaic-Woodland transition is noted for the rise of social complexity, establishment of long-distance exchange networks, and the adoption of pottery technology. The inhabitants of the Middle St. Lawrence valley witnessed and partici pated in these fundamental changes. This article combines organic residue analyses and ethnohistorical data to better unders tand the use of Vinette 1 pottery at Batiscan and Parc des Pins, two archaeological sites in the Middle St. Lawrence valley (QC).
