Abstract
This article originated as the summing-up paper for the conference 'Bishops in the Century of Iron' held at Ghent and Bruges in November 2016. It explores the themes of authority and reform in work on tenth and eleventh-century European bishops, chiefly those of northern France, the Low Countries and Germany.
