Artificial intelligence in politics

This chapter offers a brief overview of artificial intelligence (AI) in politics practice and research, for readers without expert knowledge of computing systems. After a general introduction to AI, some of the many ways in which AI is being used for logistical assistance, forecasting and decision making, and information production and dissemination are reviewed. Examples centre on the current Ukrainian war to stress the often high-stakes contexts of AI application. This chapter also considers how AI may benefit politics research using the same ternary schema. Whether for practice or research, AI systems must be used to complement human insight rather than replace it. As is argued throughout the chapter, AI has the potential for positive or negative social influence. As AI becomes increasingly prevalent, its critical evaluation becomes more important than ever to ensure that we support - and not undermine - democratic values using these technologies.
