Abstract
In this paper a Genetic Algorithm (GA) based approach is proposed to evaluate a bound on output frequency responses of nonlinear systems. In this approach a GA is applied to solve an optimisation problem associated with generalised frequency response functions of nonlinear systems. The result is then used, together with other techniques developed by the authors, to evaluate a bound on the system output frequency response. The new bound is shown to be more accurate and less conservative compared to the result obtained using previous methods and a simulation study is included to demonstrate the effectiveness and performance of the new approach. The proposed approach is of practical importance because the bound can be used as part of engineering designs when it is necessary to assess the response of nonlinear mechanical or civil engineering structures to maximum loads.
