Abstract
This paper considers the peak stress produced in cycle cranks. Descriptions of the prevailing International Standards for crank testing are described and compared. Using the most rigorous standard available, laboratory fatigue testing is detailed and the peak stresses generated from these tests identified. By fully instrumenting an on-road bike, the peak stress per crank rotation are measured while cycling on-road around a circular route. Comparisons are made between the actual stress values observed when cycling and those measured during fatigue testing.
