Abstract
This is the first progress report on investigations conducted by the authors entirely on NCB Research Contract No PSD 19 (84). The contract, which commenced 1 October 1984, follows on from Research Contract No 226072, work on which was devoted to studies related specifically to the Cadley Hill machine and that on trial at Middleton Mine: both single-boom tunnelling machines of the Horizontal-turret type (Fig 1a).
