Abstract
In this chapter, we discuss the motivation, theoretical foundation, and practice of Human–Computer Interaction across Borders (HCIxB), a field that guides the application of user-centered design to create technologies that meet the needs and aspirations of historically marginalized communities worldwide. We provide insights into HCIxB practitioners' challenges, such as navigating new domains, translating their expertise into tangible value, and addressing local contexts. We also present critical factors for conducting successful HCIxB projects, including aligning with economic, social, and environmental sustainability to avoid raising false hopes or exacerbating the digital divide. To elicit deep insights into HCIxB practice, we describe five case studies that illustrate how conventional design methods often need adaptation, with relationship-building and collaboration with community members and local organizations being crucial for success. Finally, we discuss the key challenges we see emerging as critical for those in the HCIxB space to consider.
