Women, labour, and institutional life at the National Gallery, 1824–2024

This article reconstructs, for the first time, the history of women’s labour at the National Gallery from its foundation in 1824 to the present day. Through a series of representative case studies, it examines how women helped to shape the institution as housemaids, clerks, photographers, scientists, educators, registrars, and curators, while exposing the gendered structures that governed their employment, visibility, and advancement. Drawing on personnel files, correspondence with the Treasury, committee minutes, newsletters, oral histories, and private archives, the article demonstrates how women’s work was fundamental to the Gallery’s operation despite frequently remaining undervalued or institutionally obscured. Rather than presenting a straightforward narrative of professional progress, it traces an uneven history defined by class, gender, the marriage bar, and changing conceptions of expertise. In doing so, it reinterprets the National Gallery as a workplace whose development depended on women’s often overlooked labour and professional expertise.
