User perceptions of endearment love and regional identity in Northern England

This article explores the contemporary pragmatic scope of the endearment love and its indexical links with British regional identities as perceived by English language users in the United Kingdom. Popular metapragmatic stereotypes often associate the term with specific ‘northern’ English, working-class and White socio-ethnic identities, frequently framed through the lens of ‘northern friendliness’. However, this analysis suggests a more nuanced interactional reality in which the construction of love as an inward-looking cultural boundary marker may complicate its accessibility for newcomers seeking a marker of authentic local identity for place-making and belonging. Furthermore, the study proposes that the residual semantics of the term ([+female, +intimate, -authority]), alongside its specific sociodemographic indexicalities, might work against the wider geographical and social proliferation of the term, effectively restricting its use to the specific localised contexts and established social groups in which it now exists.
