This paper aims to provide empirical evidence on the role of blockchain adoption in sustainability performance of supply chains in China. Blockchain technology is an immutable, distributed digital ledger or database technology first proposed by Nakamoto (2008) as the core technology of the digital currency Bitcoin (Schmidt and Wagner, 2019). Although blockchain was initially developed as an innovative technology in computer science, many scholars consider it as a disruptive interdisciplinary technology that can change the business models of various economic sectors, including food, agriculture, clothing, and their supply chains, and can significantly promote the development of sustainable supply chain (Kshetri, 2018). The development of information technology has made the modern supply chain global and diverse, and regulatory policies and cultures from different countries make information assessment and risk management difficult to conduct (Johnson, 2006; Sarpong, 2014). In previous studies, blockchain has been considered as one of the feasible solutions to supply chain sustainability issues, as it can improve traceability and transparency (Maurer, 2017; Oudani et al., 2023; Bai and Sarkis, 2020) and enhance information system security and information sharing (Abeyratne and Monfared, 2016; Biswas et al., 2023; Dong et al., 2017). This paper builds upon previous research and extends it by applying a mixed methodology of qualitative interviews and quantitative event studies. The main research question of this study is: How does blockchain technology adoption affect sustainability performance of supply chains in China?
