Muir, M. and Walker, V. (2026) Service evaluation into the effects of the compassion group on patients of Westerdale North. FPOP Bulletin: Psychology of Older People (174). pp. 56-62. ISSN: 2396-9652
Abstract
A compassion-focused therapy group was delivered to inpatients on a functional older adult’s ward (Westerdale North at Roseberry Park Hospital, Middlesbrough) within Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust. Fifteen participants completed the eight-session group during their admission. A total of 89 responses were included in a thematic analysis exploring the effectiveness of the group intervention with older adults. Results suggested a statistically significant improvement in self-compassion scores (p=0.0014). Completion of the group was associated with increased self-compassion, enhanced wellbeing, connection and recovery.
