Abstract
This article analyses the content and discourse of long-running Cuban youth magazine, Somos Jóvenes, in the periods 1977–1984 and 1989–2003, to better understand the identities, experiences and place within the revolutionary project of two generations of young people. The magazine's eclectic character, and its negotiation of ‘official’ and youth-driven discourses, offer a window onto cultural perceptions of youth that were relatively stable, but which were required to accommodate changing moral and social demands as the optimism and relative prosperity of the first era gave way to the disorientation and hardships that followed the fall of socialism in Europe.
