Abstract
Background: New solutions are needed to meet the growing capacity and demand gaps in ophthalmology. This article presents the results of a survey undertaken to understand the clinical challenges, scope of work and potential barriers leading to the development of a bespoke paediatric ophthalmology advanced practice curriculum.
Aims: To identify key curriculum areas for advanced clinical practice in paediatric ophthalmology and assess the willingness of non-medical eye care professionals to undertake advanced clinical practitioner (ACP) roles.
Methods: A survey was distributed through relevant professional bodies and groups to gather input from paediatric ophthalmologists and non-medical eye care professionals on curriculum areas and role uptake.
Findings: The results led to the creation of the MMedSci ACP ophthalmology (paediatrics) programme at the University of Sheffield. The largest barrier to advanced clinical practice in paediatric ophthalmology for both groups was funding. Secondary and tertiary barriers for ophthalmologists were programme quality and sustained commitment, while these were time and support for eye care professionals.
Conclusions: The development of a paediatric ophthalmology advanced clinical practice curriculum may enhance understanding of the role and workforce. Funding, supervision, time and support issues must be addressed to facilitate uptake.
