Abstract
The Artful Activism Toolkit is designed for activists and human rights defenders to support their use of arts-based methods to expand their work. The toolkit describes a set of ‘creative pedagogies’ that make use of the potential for arts-based practice to disrupt dominant historical and imaginative paradigms and create space for the articulation of alternatives. The toolkit is based on the findings of workshops, exhibits, residencies, research, and trainings that have took place from 2017-2020 in Bangladesh and Uganda as part of an AHRC project led by the Centre for Applied Human Rights at the University of York in collaboration with Action Aid Uganda, Action Aid Bangladesh, Chittagong Institute of Fine Arts, Femwrite, Jog Art Space, Makerere University Language and Literature Department, and Tannistho Natuya Theatre Group.
