Abstract
Antiracist academic activism raises urgent questions about the role of contemporary universities and the academics who work within them. As deep socio-racial crises collide with massive anti-racist mobilizations, this book focuses on the practices of academics working within and against their institutions in pursuit of anti-racist social justice. Amidst a harsh critique of the neoliberal and imperial character of the university, Joseph-Salisbury and Connelly situate the university as a contested space, full of contradictions and tensions. Drawing on original empirical data, the book considers how anti-racist academic activists navigate barriers and backlashes to harness the university's opportunities and resources in the service of communities of resistance. By showing that the practices of academic anti-racist activism are complex, diverse, and multifaceted, and paying particular attention to how academic activists grapple with their own complicities in the harms perpetrated and perpetuated by institutions of higher education, this book, and the manifesto represented in the final chapter, is a call to arms for academics who are, or want to be, committed to social justice.
