Abstract—This musicological study investigates the structural characteristics of Mexican vocal melodies through MIDI feature extraction, with a focus on ambitus, pitch-class entropy, and interval distribution. The objective is to quantitatively analyze these elements to understand the diversity and complexity of Mexican folk music. The research also explores the potential correlation between these musical features and the songs’ digital popularity, as indicated by Spotify play counts. Findings reveal a broad range of ambitus, suggesting varied vocal demands, and diverse levels of tonal complexity as evidenced by pitch-class entropy. However, the study does not find a significant correlation between these musical characteristics and their popularity on digital platforms.
