Abstract
For the new mobilities paradigm, ways of encapsulating the realities of place or culture bring into conflict materialist modes of apprehension we associate with actor-network and non-representational theory, with more traditional hermeneutics focusing on the human subject. Examining urban mobilities with the use of technology, the chapter discusses synaesthesia (research epistemologies for urban environments) and performative synaesthetics (methodological means). Synaesthesia bridges positivist comprehensions of reality through the senses with technological mediations of the human aesthetic or hermeneutic capacity. Performative synaesthetics connects precognitive sensory or affective comprehensions of reality with technological mediations of the human capacity to compose a poly-rhythmic narrative of movement in urban research fields.
