Abstract
The history of the Dunstanville family at the turn of the 13th century provides a Sussex case study of two issues that underlay baronial discontent and the concession of Magna Carta: the guardianship of an heir and the treatment of widows. It also raises broader questions about the restrictions faced by women of the Anglo-Norman elite.
