Abstract
Many critics have highlighted the presence and importance of women in Galdós’s work. However, relatively few have focussed on the role of men. This article examines the representation of the male characters in the Torquemada Novels. It considers how they can be associated with various ‘types’ of the period and the concept of the ‘new man’, as well as how they relate to the women in this series. At the same time it draws a link between what we find in these novels and what Galdós wrote in his press articles, notably the Obras inéditas, highlighting, for instance the significance of his articles on fashion, thereby revealing how a knowledge of these writings can enrichen our appreciate of the Torquemada novels.
