Abstract
This paper describes the development of a large calibration triaxial cell incorporating a dual load actuator whereby an independent foundation and surcharge load can be applied simultaneously. Furthermore, the paper also reports on a novel approach adopted to overcome difficulties often associated with the manufacture of large one dimensionally consolidated samples. This advanced testing system was developed specifically to examine the settlement performance of footings supported on stone columns; results of preliminary tests are presented in order to validate the functionality of the equipment and highlight the potential of the newly developed apparatus.
