Abstract
Contemporaneous with the global shortage of registered nurses (International Council of Nurses and ICN, 2004. International Council of Nurses, ICN, 2004. The global shortage of registered nurses: an overview of issues and actions. ICN, Geneva.ICN, 2004), duties and workload are shifting from doctors to nurses, and from nurses to health care assistants (HCAs). This “role drift” is not new and not unique to nursing; allied health professionals, pharmacists and dentists are delegating what were previous core duties to assistants or technicians. Unfortunately “role drift” often occurs in an ad hoc fashion and may exceed its original scope. Despite the fact that they are at the front line in providing care, there is no statutory duty for HCAs to have any training and they remain unlicensed and unregulated. This means that their role often varies depending upon the country and the clinical area in which they are employed. Copyright © 2007 Elsevier Ltd All rights reserved.
