Turkey's energy profile and the importance of renewable energy sources

Turkey's energy demand has increased rapidly in parallel with rapid urbanization and developing technology. In spite of the fact that 70% of Turkey's total energy demand is being provided from a diversified portfolio of imports and it has been experiencing rapid demand growth in all segments of the energy sector, the importance of renewable energy (such as solar energy, wind power and wave energy), which is environmentally friendly and leads to lower emissions, has been still not sufficiently understood in Turkey. Turkey meets its increasing energy demand with both fossil fuels and nuclear energy, that is a costly source of alternative energy, needs long time to be constructed and has many environmental risks due to natural disasters, whereas the country has reach renewable energy sources. It is important to discuss the role of the renewable energy sources in Turkey where has tried to resolve the energy crisis by importing energy. The main purpose of this study is to discuss the energy policy of Turkey and to argue why the renewable energy is important for Turkey.
