The faunal remains. In P.Arthur. "Masseria Quattro Macine" - A deserted medieval village and its territory in southern Apulia: an interim report on field survey, excavation and document analysis

This report presents the results of the first four years of an archaeological project that examines the hinterland of Otranto, in southern Puglia. The survey suggests that the area saw an increase in both the settlement during the late Roman / Byzantine high that in the late Middle Ages. The excavations cover two major sites.

The first site is the monumental church of Le Centoporte, Giurdignano, which seems to have been built as part of a monastery in the late fifth and early sixth century. It seems that the building was never completed and that around the seventh century it was redesigned so that it could house a small community within its walls.

The second site is the medieval village of Quattro Macine, which may have been founded before the Norman conquest of Apulia, in 1071, only to be abandoned during the fourteenth century and finally replaced by a farm. Two churches, Norman and Byzantine foundation, with their associated cemeteries, are described. Further findings are also discussed, with the aim to present a preliminary model of the settlement change and land use.
