From ionics to energetics in the nervous system

This paper reviews electrochemical energy transduction relating to electrical spike generation and propagation in neurons. Passive and active ionic transport across the cell membrane is discussed. The associated metabolic cost is introduced and implications for neural codes and their efficiency in information processing are considered.
