Is British Sovereignty at stake in the EU Referendum?

The issue of Sovereignty has repeatedly been discussed during the run-up to the 2016 EU Referendum. However, what is sovereignty, and what does it mean to the British people? This article aims to establish what British Sovereignty actually looks like, and attempts to establish whether Britain’s sovereignty is fundamentally at threat from the EU, and if it is, whether that is an unacceptable price to pay for EU membership. By considering the British constitutional arrangements, this article will argue that the notion of British sovereignty includes certain key facets not of constitutional importance, but of ‘Britishness’ and that this ‘Britishness’ is really the issue at the heart of the sovereignty debate.
