Abstract
Electrolytic capacitors form an important part of most drive systems. This paper considers the effect of gamma irradiation on the electrical properties of electrolytic capacitors. To achieve this, electrolytic capacitors with capacitances ranging from 47 μF to 1000 μF are exposed to radiation levels ranging from 0 to 910 kGy. Measurements of the capacitors’ capacitance and equivalent series resistance are performed before and after exposure to radiation to determine the effect on the electrical properties. It is seen that the irradiation primarily impacts the equivalent series resistance, with some capacitors exhibiting as much as a 60% increase
