Abstract
Nurses and midwives constitute the largest proportion of the healthcare workforce that provides direct care to the consumers of healthcare services. Although, in the public mindset, nursing and midwifery are perceived to be one and the same profession, internally this is far from the truth. From a generalist nursing perspective that encompasses a broad range of specializations, interests and, indeed, levels of autonomy and accountability, it is less than edifying to hear many midwives extolling the virtues of midwifery over the more mundane “forms” of nursing.
