Editing on stage: Theatrical research for a critical edition of John Fletcher and Philip Massinger’s Love’s Cure, or The Martial Maid

This essay analyses the results of a performance research project undertaken in 2012 at the Shakespeare Institute. It investigated the staging potential of 'Love's Cure, or The Martial Maid' by John Fletcher and Philip Massinger, employing original performance practices to replicate to some degree the physical conditions under which the play was originally staged in 1615. The article summarises the ways in which the author, as editor of the play, could use the results from a series of workshops to formulate editorial stage directions that are compatible with actual performance practice, as well as to enrich the annotation with appropriate reference to the stageability of the play.
