Abstract
Daniel Barenboim is an acute analyst of what music can teach us about coexistence. Through the Western-Eastern Divan Orchestra, Barenboim facilitates dialogue between cultures in the Middle East that are often in conflict, in particular Israeli and Arabs. Through Barenboim’s approach, music appears as an exemplary form for showing the value of dialogue.
Barenboim’s key thoughts and arguments relating to dialogue are underwritten by his understanding of the inextricable relation between music and the human condition. His approach to music values harmony and interpretation over the idea of a single, authentic score. This emphasis on flexibility and interpretive differences is crucial for dialogue.
