'A Citizen and not a Soldier': The British Volunteer Movement and the War against Napoleon

A commissioned article the result of a conference paper for the Nation Borders and Identities wrokshop. The work explores the complex identities that the part-time volunteers forces of Britain had, by using a variety of source material from acorss the UK. It argues that the identity of these part-time soldiers was under a constant process of negotiation, varying with government policy, local circumstances and the changing nature of the war.
